Christmas Bacon

A fundraiser was done over the holidays in order to raise money for items such as mattresses, pigs & chickens, and also to find monthly sponsors for the new children. We are happy to say that 6 pigs have been purchased for future breeding and selling, and 4 more child sponsors have been found. 12 of the 16 kids now have monthly sponsorship for food and education. This will be the first time the new children have ever gone to school. Let's pray that they can adjust well to a new home and attending school.

Make that SIX new children...

There are now 6 new members of the MCO family as shown in the photo below:I hear that everyone is doing fine so far, but there are some remaining needs. The home is short on mattresses, basic furniture, and monthly support for the new children. Another eventual goal is to finish the upstairs of the dormitory so the boys can stay there instead of being crowded in the director's house.

This Christmas will be fundraising time to cover these needs. Thanks to those who have already offered support!

Beginning 2010

Recent excited news is, as of January 16th, Emmanuel has a new wife, Sholade Shaw! She has moved to the farm to be with her husband, son Steven (named after my dad), and the MCO children. I met quiet, kind-hearted Shola back on the Mercy Ship in 2004. It will be wonderful to have her there at the orphanage site at last.

We are currently setting up $30/month sponsorships through Servlife International for the children. 6 of the 10 have been "adopted" so far. Thank you sponsors!

Also, construction of the dorm continues to progress as funds trickle in. See the recent progress in the pictures below taken in January 2010. It is really neat to see the design sketches I emailed to friends in Sierra Leone come to life.

Recent News

The children have moved! The kids are no longer staying in a rental house closer to town, but are now all staying at the Director's 3-bedroom house on the farm....all 10 kids and the staff. A few children have changed schools, and all the older kids are being taught to care for the crops and chickens.

I talk to Emmanuel the director about once a week, and I recently asked him, "Does the house feel crowded?" He reponded that it is fine; they built another outhouse to accomodate everyone. We both agreed, however, that a dormitory for the kids would be a good next development. God always provides- funds to cover the majority of the 2-story dorm have come in, and construction is half the wall height of the first floor!

It is now the dry season, so the motorbike taxi service is better now that it's not constantly raining. In December, the first batch of 300 chickens were sold, and another batch has been ordered from the neighboring country of Guinea.

At the moment, monthly sponsorships for the kids and staff are in the process of being set up. More info to come!
